Photos telling a story.

The task given to us was to tell a story through several photos, a minimum of three, without actually showing actions. So an example of SHOWING an action would be a girl swinging her arm at another subject. That is not what needs to be done. The following photos are examples of telling a story without showing action. My subject landed on her knees in the staircase due to stepping on an object.

Journalists in Peril

With the start of the new semester, Ms.Turner decided to focus our attention on journalists that have risked their lives and died on the job. She introduced us to a new website called cpj.org  that reported mishaps around the world involving journalists. We were able to browse through the website and found out that hundreds of journalists have died since 1992 due to their job. Then Lasantha Wickrematunge's situation was brought up. Wickrematunge was a journalist for the controversial Sunday Leader that was harassed, threatened and eventually killed, just like many other journalists. He wrote about the president of Sri Lanka, and the deals that he made in order to stay in charge. Another example of journalists in peril is Daniel Pearl. We watched a movie called "A Might Heart" and it featured the real live events that happened to Daniel during his kidnapping. He was an American journalist that went to Karachi, Pakistan reporting with his wife about the recent bombings. He was kidnapped and eventually beheaded by his abductors. I strongly believe that although journalists' jobs are to reveal the truth, they should not be chased after and murdered for their work. Wickrematunge believed that his death was not for no reason, but rather for people all around the world to realize how cruel a government can be.

This semester

At the beginning of the year, I was unsure of what I was going to learn, since I packed so much information inside my head last year. I learned about journalism ethics and watched a movie about it called "Shattered Glass." The movie was about a young journalist that plagiarized, that in the end lead to his own downfall and betrayal of his friends. After, I dealt with difficult situations and had to conclude whether or not it was ethical or not.

Using the inverted pyramid, I took a bunch of scrambled details and wrote a short story from most important to least important. Another journalistic lesson Ms.Turner brought up was writing different kind of leads. We were given a textbook and learned about different types of leads including blind leads, scene setter, startling statement and many more. Later on in the year we used the program Skype to interview our classmates that were across the room, to get a feeling of international interviews.

Mary the Ripper?

Remember hearing about that unsolved case of a man killing a series of prostitutes? Some say it wasn't a man that killed them, but a woman..

How does it feel to create a blog?

To create a blog is a very exciting thing, knowing that you'll be able to post your feelings up online. It's also nice to see others post what they have to see as well.
